🦢 A splurge with history — the White Swan (白天鹅宾馆). Opened in 1983 on Shamian Island overlooking the Pearl River, the White Swan was China’s first five-star hotel — and the first modern luxury hotel designed and run by Chinese owners. It became a national landmark (famous for the “故乡水” homeland-waterfall atrium) and has hosted countless heads of state. Inside, its Cantonese restaurant 玉堂春暖 (Yu Tang Chun Nuan / “Jade River”) holds a Michelin one star and Black Pearl three diamonds — see my Michelin guide and Black Pearl guide. Worth a night, or at least a meal, if you want a taste of Guangzhou’s golden age.
