China is a fun, family-friendly place to travel — locals adore children, and your kids will get plenty of warm (sometimes overwhelming) attention. The logistics just need a little planning. Here’s what actually matters with a baby or young children in tow.
Stroller or baby carrier?
For a baby or toddler, a soft carrier often beats a stroller. Crowds are dense, historic sites have stairs, and not every metro station has a lift. A carrier keeps you nimble; bring a compact umbrella stroller for flat areas, malls and airports if you want both.
Formula, diapers & changing
- Diapers and formula are widely available in supermarkets, baby shops, import stores and via delivery apps (JD, Taobao) in any city — but bring a few days’ supply of your usual brand to start.
- Baby-care rooms (母婴室) with changing tables and nursing space are common in malls, airports and high-speed rail stations; elsewhere, carry a portable changing mat.
- Tap water isn’t drinkable — use bottled or boiled water for formula (hot water is free everywhere). See staying healthy in China.
Feeding kids
Plenty of mild, kid-friendly options:
- Congee (rice porridge), plain noodles, steamed buns, dumplings, rice, eggs, tofu and fruit are everywhere and gentle on young palates.
- Ask for “bú yào là” (不要辣 — no chilli) and less salt/oil; most kitchens happily oblige.
- Supermarkets stock jarred baby food, snacks and familiar brands in bigger cities.
Getting around with kids
- High-speed rail is the easiest way to travel as a family — roomy, with toilets and space to move; far less stressful than flying. See the rail guide.
- Car seats: Didi and taxis usually don’t provide them. Bring your own, or book a Didi “child seat” option where available.
- The metro is cheap and clean; use station lifts (look for the wheelchair/elevator signs) with a stroller.
Attractions kids love
- Giant pandas in Chengdu — the ultimate family highlight.
- Shanghai Disney Resort, big-city zoos, aquariums and science museums, and spacious city parks.
- Many sights are stroller-navigable on the main paths even where side areas have steps.
Health & comfort
- Pack a kids’ medical kit (rehydration salts, thermometer, any regular meds) and check air quality with an AQI app on bad days.
- For anything medical, international clinics in big cities have English-speaking paediatric care — and this is exactly why travel insurance matters.
